The Landmark Casino announced the completion of the restoration of the historic Wild Bill Hickok Plaza located next to the casino at 51 Sherman Street in Deadwood, South Dakota.
The Plaza is home to a bust of the famed lawman “Wild Bill” Henry Butler Hickok, sculpted by renowned sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who also created the Crazy Horse sculpture in Custer, South Dakota.
The bust was commissioned by Deadwood resident, George Hunter, in 1951 and gifted to the City by Hunter.
John Sheldon, General Manager for The Landmark Casino, said the restoration included the removal of 5 tons of infertile soil and the installation of 5 tons of fertile topsoil, over 100 plants and flowers, 5 tons of native washed stone, and a new watering system. The landscape firm of Betsy & Mark Carbo led the design and installation.
The Plaza was constructed around 1980 by the Deadwood Round Table Women’s Club, which was established in 1887 in Deadwood.
